Velvet Hanger is an iPhone app for photographing the clothes you own and recording what you wore each day. It needs iOS 17 or later, and you sign in with Apple.

Most questions turn out to be about three things: where the photographs live, what happens when you have no signal, and how to get rid of everything. Those are answered first. If your answer is not below, email us — a person reads it.

Your photographs

Where are my photographs stored, and can anyone else see them?
A photograph is taken on your iPhone and saved on your iPhone first. When the app has a connection, a copy is uploaded to our private storage so that your wardrobe survives losing the phone and follows you to a new one. That storage is not public: there is no address anyone can guess or share, and the app fetches an image only through a short-lived link issued to your own signed-in account.
Nobody else can see them. Velvet Hanger has no sharing, no feed, no profiles, no followers and no public pages — there is no mechanism in the app by which another person could reach your wardrobe. We do not browse your photographs, publish them, or sell them to anyone.
Does the app post anything anywhere?
No. Nothing you add is posted, suggested to anyone, or made discoverable. There is no social side to switch off, because there is not one.
Does it need my whole photo library?
No. The app asks for the camera when you photograph a piece, and for the photo library when you pick an existing picture. It reads the images you choose, and nothing else.

Working offline

Does Velvet Hanger work without a connection?
Yes — fully. Add a piece, photograph it, type its details, log what you wore, look back through the calendar: all of it works with no signal at all. Everything is written to a database on the phone as you go, and the phone is the copy the app reads from. Syncing is what happens afterwards, not something you wait for.
What actually syncs, and when?
Anything you have added or changed is queued on the device and sent the next time the app has both a connection and a moment to do it. You do not have to trigger it, and there is nothing to press. If you have been offline for a week, a week of changes go up together.
One of my pieces has a small square in the corner of its tile. Is something wrong?
No — that marker means only "this piece has not reached our servers yet". It is normal, and it is the expected state for anything you added while offline, or for a piece whose photograph is still uploading.
It is drawn deliberately quietly, because it is not an error: the piece is saved, it is in your wardrobe, and you can rename it, log it and filter by it exactly as normal. The marker clears itself once the piece has synced. If it is still there after the app has had a steady connection for a while, open the app and leave it in the foreground for a minute; if it will not clear after that, tell us and we will look.
Will I lose anything if I stay offline?
No. Nothing is deleted for being unsynced, and the app stays fully usable indefinitely. The one trade-off is that an unsynced piece exists only on that phone — it will not appear on a second device, it will not be in an export, and it would not survive losing the handset. Everything catches up on its own once you are back online.

A garment's details

Why does a piece say “not sure” next to its details?
Because nothing has confirmed that field yet. Velvet Hanger can optionally ask an AI model to read a garment's photograph and suggest details — a category, a colour, a material, a pattern and so on. Where it was not confident, or where it produced nothing at all, the field is marked “not sure” rather than shown to you as fact. A guess is never displayed as though it were known.
If tagging never ran — you are offline, the photograph has not finished uploading, or you have used this period's tagging allowance — then every field reads “not sure”. That is the intended reading, not a fault. The screen is then simply the place where you fill in the piece's details yourself, and it works with no AI involved at all.
Do I have to use AI tagging?
No. It is optional and it is limited — there is an allowance rather than unlimited tagging — and the app is complete without it. Every field on every piece can be typed by hand, and adding a piece has never required anything more than a photograph. If you would like to know what tagging sends and where, that is set out on the Privacy page.
The suggested category or colour is wrong.
Change it. Open the piece and edit the field, or pick the right category; your version is recorded as confirmed and is what the app uses from then on. Only fields you actually edit are recorded — opening a piece and closing it again asserts nothing on your behalf, and a detail you have typed yourself is not overwritten by a later suggestion.
Why has a piece not been tagged at all?
Tagging reads the photograph from our storage, so a piece has to have finished syncing before it can be tagged. A piece added offline waits until it has uploaded. Each piece is only ever asked about once, so a piece you have already filled in by hand is left alone.

Your account and your data

How do I sign in?
With Sign in with Apple, which is the only way in. Apple decides what to pass on: it may give us your real email address, or a private relay address ending @privaterelay.appleid.com, and it may share no name at all. All three are fine — the app says plainly which of them it got, and a relay address reaches you just as well.
How do I get a copy of my data?
In the app, open your account and choose Export my data. The app asks the server for everything it holds for you, writes it to a dated file and hands it to the iOS share sheet, so you choose where it goes — Files, Mail, AirDrop. The file is named for the day you made it:
velvet-hanger-export-2026-07-29.json
The export needs a connection, and it contains what has synced — so if you have pieces still carrying the not-synced marker, get online first and let them go up.
How do I delete my account, and exactly what does that remove?
In the app, open your account, choose Delete my account and confirm. It happens immediately and it cannot be undone. There is no grace period and no recycle bin, so please take an export first if you want to keep anything.
Deleting removes every piece in your wardrobe; every day and every outfit you have logged; every photograph you have uploaded, including the cut-outs made from them; the records of any AI tagging that ran on your account; and the account itself, along with the email address Apple gave us. Nothing of yours is kept behind afterwards.
Two practical notes. Deletion needs a connection, because the copies held on our servers are what is being removed — if the app says to try again when you have one, that is why. And deleting your account does not uninstall the app; if you want the copy on the handset gone as well, delete Velvet Hanger from your iPhone in the usual way.
Can I use the app on more than one device?
Yes. Sign in with the same Apple ID and the wardrobe and wear history that have synced will be there. Anything still marked as not synced on the first device has to go up before the second one can see it.

Something else

The app will not sign in on the Simulator.
That is expected. Sign in with Apple needs a real Apple ID, which the iOS Simulator does not have. Use a device.
Does the app tell me what to wear?
No, and it is not meant to. Velvet Hanger keeps a record — what you own, and what you wore. There are no outfit suggestions, no styling advice, no scores and nothing to buy.

Getting in touch

Email support@boratechnologies.com. Every message is read by a person, and we answer as quickly as we can.

If you are reporting something that went wrong, it saves a round trip if you can say which iPhone and iOS version you are on, what you did, what you expected, and what happened instead. If it involves a particular piece, its name is enough — please do not send us your photographs unless we ask.

For what we collect and why, see Privacy. For the terms the app is offered under, see Terms.
