Privacy

Velvet Hanger is made by Bora Technologies. This page says what the app collects, where it goes, who else ever sees it, and how to remove all of it. It is written to be read rather than skipped, so it is short and it is specific. Where something is a genuine trade-off, it is stated as one rather than buried.

What we collect

Only what the app needs to be a record of your wardrobe:

That is the list. The app contains no advertising, no third-party analytics and no tracking SDKs. We do not ask for your location, your contacts, your calendar or an advertising identifier, and we do not build a profile of you or follow you across other apps and sites.

Where it goes, and who can see it

Everything is written to a database on your iPhone first — which is why the app works with no signal at all. When there is a connection, a copy is synced to our servers so that your wardrobe survives a lost or replaced phone.

The copy on our servers is private. Photographs live in private storage with no public address; the app reads an image only through a short-lived link issued to your own signed-in account. Your wardrobe is never public, is never shown to another user, and is never sold, rented or handed to advertisers or data brokers. Velvet Hanger has no sharing, no feed and no profiles, so there is no route by which another person could see your clothes.

A small number of our engineers can reach the systems the data sits in, because somebody has to be able to run and repair them. We access an individual account's content only when it is necessary — to investigate a fault you have reported to us, or where the law requires it — and not out of curiosity.

The service runs on infrastructure operated by third parties (hosting, database and file storage providers) acting on our instructions. They hold the data in order to run the service and for no purpose of their own. The one exception, which is a real one, is AI tagging.

AI tagging, and what it means

Velvet Hanger can suggest a garment's details from its photograph — a category, a colour, a material and so on. This is optional and limited, and the app is complete without it: every field can be typed by hand, and adding a piece has never required anything but a photograph. If you never use tagging, nothing in this section applies to you.

When tagging does run on a piece, that piece's photograph is sent to Google and processed by a Gemini model, together with an instruction describing the fields we want back. Nothing else about you goes with it: not your name, not your email address, not your wear history, and not the rest of your wardrobe.

You should know what that means today. We currently use Google's free Gemini API tier, and the terms of that tier allow Google to use what is submitted to it — including the garment photographs we send — to improve their products and models. We cannot promise you that a photograph sent for tagging is private from Google, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It is the price of the free tier, and it is the reason tagging is optional and off the critical path: if that trade is not one you want to make, fill the details in by hand and no photograph of yours is ever sent to Google.

Tagging is the only circumstance in which your photographs leave our own systems. It never runs on a piece that has not finished syncing, it is asked at most once per piece, and a detail you have typed yourself is not sent for a second opinion.

Deleting your account

You can delete everything from inside the app: open your account, choose Delete my account, and confirm.

That permanently removes every piece in your wardrobe, every day and outfit you have logged, every photograph you have uploaded and the cut-outs made from them, the records of any AI tagging that ran on your account, and the account itself along with the email address Apple gave us. It happens immediately. It cannot be undone — there is no grace period and no recovery, so if you want to keep anything, use Export my data first.

Deleting your account does not remove the app from your handset. To clear the copy held on the phone, delete Velvet Hanger from your iPhone as well.

Two honest caveats. Deletion clears our live systems straight away; routine backups taken before you deleted expire on their own schedule, and are never searched or restored to bring your content back. And a photograph already sent to Google for tagging is subject to Google's own terms and retention, and is not ours to recall.

How long we keep things

Your wardrobe, your wear history and your photographs are kept for as long as you have an account, because they are the thing the app is for. We do not expire them, and we do not delete pieces you have stopped wearing. When you delete your account, they go. If an account is left dormant for a long period we may get in touch before removing anything, and we will never delete your wardrobe without telling you first.

Children

Velvet Hanger is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, write to us and we will remove it.

Your choices

If you would like a copy of what we hold, a correction to it, or its deletion, and you would rather ask a person than use the controls in the app, email us and we will do it.

Changes to this policy

If we change what we collect or where it goes, we will change this page and move the date at the top. Where a change is a material one — anything that widens what leaves our systems — we will say so in the app rather than quietly amending the page.
